Tamper Room – Coffee Shop for Makers

A Hyper Local Mini-“Esty”

A couple weekends ago, we visited Tamper Room in Fremont. We have heard great things about this spot, and a bunch of our colleagues recommended this shop. Since we were in the mood for coffee and crafts, Tamper Room is perfect for a visit.

Located in Fremont, next to the local Costco, Tamper Room features works of various local artists and roasters. They roast their own coffee beans, as far as we can tell, but instead, they feature local roasters. But perhaps what they are known for is their croffles. Croffles are really what you think they are; a croissant pressed with a waffle iron. The result is a tasty crunchy waffle with a soft layered center. Tamper Room serves up various kinds of croffles – from savory to sweet.

And many more! Go check them out!

We arrived on a Saturday when they opened. Overall vibe of this spot is a mix of cafe and gallery mixed together. The shop is filled with art for purchase. Nothing big, think stickers, prints, that sort of art. A physical mini-Esty shop is more fitting. Not only that, Tamper Room also has various coffee beans from Bay Area roasters.

The Croffle And The Coffee

At the heart of the shop, we think that Tamper Room is more of a brunch place instead of a coffee place. Don’t get me wrong, their coffee is awesome. But when you compare their coffee with their croffle, the croffle definitely wins. We ordered 2 different croffles – a banana foster croffle and avocado croffle. The avocado croffle is similar to the avocado toast (just substitute the toast for a croffle). They get their bakery items from a local bakery. They definitely do not get them from Costco then put them in a waffle iron.

After a brief wait, we got our coffee and croffles. They are delicious, so much so that we think it is better than their coffee. Both coffee and croffles are not phenomenal by any means, but they are great if you’re looking for a bite to eat while catching up with friends chilling at a table. We were given plastic utensils and cutting into the croffle isn’t easy. So it’s not the best with a knife and fork. At some point, we were tempted to just pick up the croffle and eat them.

Coffee is good. We’re not sure if they rotate beans from various roasters, but it’d be awesome if they did. It would be like sampling different roasters from around the bay without having to go to the different roaster yourself, won’t that be nice? We would totally love that.

So if you’re looking for a cafe to enjoy a small brunch and a cup of coffee and chill with your friends for a little, pay the Tamper Room a visit. While you’re there, check out the art featured there!
